    the States in which the American Union Telephone Company operated were Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. In addition to its own unexcelled toll and local service the company had long-term traffic agreements with all the large independent telephone systems in the East,  giving it direct toll connection with the hundreds of thousands of users of independent telephones in the Eastern States and Middle West.
    By June 1, 1910 the company was in receivership.
